review 1: As a native Kansan I am so aware that Kansas has an often well-deserved one dimensional reputation, as flat as its geography. It seems rural Kansas can paint a target on its own back of simplistic political foolishness and a life completely foreign to urban America. Mr. Drape does a lovely job of representing much of what is strong and good and true in the life on the plains. Football is the vehicle for the story, but not the story itself.
review 2: I enjoyed the book. I liked learning about Smith Center, which I was unfamiliar with before reading the book. In addition to learning about the football team, the reader learns about likely factors contributing to the success of the football team many of which revolve around community and responsibility. ... moretely, for those who do not enjoy football or learning about small town life in rural Kansas, I'm not sure you'll enjoy the book. I am also curious about those living in this town who do not like football. How do they get along or fit in with the majority? less
