Renegades by Marissa Meyer | Book Review

The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies—humans with extraordinary abilities—who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone…except the villains they once overthrew.

Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice—and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.

Renegades was such a ride for me! I went into this book, not knowing anything about it other than the fact that it involved superhero and supervillains. In this book, there are the anarchists and the renegades and we follow Nova – a “pseudo” member of the anarchists and Adrian – a renegade. Nova wants vengeance for her family; while Adrian wants justice for his mother.

It honestly took me a while to get into this book – I think around 100 pages which is unique because usually if a book doesn’t grip me by 50 pages, I put it aside. But I pushed through those extra 50 pages and I’m so glad I did. I was so intrigued by Meyer’s world building and this world where there’s prodigies who are reminiscent of x-men and even Sky High – honestly Adrian’s fathers kind of reminded me of the parents from that movie.

As said before, we follow Nova – who was taken in by her uncle and the anarchists when she was six. Nova is an interesting main character and watching her journey through the book and her internal war with herself was also intriguing. And Adrian who was adopted by his two dads after the death of his mother (sweet as hell). I don’t want to give too much away but I just love them both for different reasons.

Anyway, I felt myself drawn to Nova and to Adrian and I found myself enjoying their encounters and this budding kind of but not really romance forming between the two. I also really enjoyed Nova’s interactions with Leroy and Honey; as well as hers with Ruby and Oscar.  I think some of my favorite parts of all of Meyer’s books are the character interactions. I do love some strong character relationships and I felt Meyer did a fantastic job with those in this book.

Overall, I’m really glad that I decided to start my new year off with this book because I absolutely loved it and I’m highly awaiting for the sequel/conclusion.

Rating: 5/5 stars.
