review 1: Which star to give The Last a Time I Died? Can I go with a "3.5?"The novel intrigued me and I was hooked within the first 25 pages, but some of the content was unsettling. I mean, the clinical suicide I was expecting, but almost-not-quite-graphic dog fight scenes that may actually be pretty important for Cordoba's character development? That threw me off a bit. Among other situations that only arose in specific clinical situations. Erhm. That was certainly a new experience.I did enjoy the writing style and the sequential revealing of the events, past and present, even interspersed with an omniscient POV. It all seemed to add up to one complete story, nothing feels to be missing.I read to enjoy a novel, not to pick it apart. Though some passages were a tad unsavory for my p... moreersonal tastes, I did find my heart racing and my eyes skipping ahead because I needed to know what happened next, and only when I knew was I able to reread at a more focused pace.If you have a low squick factor, take a chance on this novel. It's actually quite decent.
review 2: I knew this would not be a warm and fuzzy book when I selected it to read. BUT I thought it would be a good interesting read. Nine chapters in the book failed to live up to its promise. I got the self destructive alcohol binges and the downward spiral. What I never got was a likable character. I never got those promised flashbacks in 9 chapters. What I got was a confusing jumbled of is this a flashback or is this real time? I gave up and read the last chapter and it lived up to the first nine. less
