review 1: I mean come on, if you don't like this book something is wrong with you. It's a pioneering story of revenge that captures the reality of a time out ancestors roamed America on horses and outlaws etc... A true western with the violence of a Cormac Mcarthy western but the amazingly interesting cast of characters who are complex and original like Katherine Dunn's Geek Love. The dialog is spot on and fucking hilarious at times. I would understand if some people like other westerns better but if you says you don't like The Thicket at all then you are just thick in the head!
review 2: If McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" & Twain's "Huck Finn" had a love child, "The Thicket" is what would happen. Told in a voice very similar to Huck, but with the torture, blood, rape, and t
... moreorture of "Meridian". This book was not something I normally might have read, but it was haled by one critic as similar to McCarthy, so I was intrigued. If you like McCarthy, this is not as dark, but had some serious gore. And if you like Twain, think way way more contemporary. I'd recommend it, but not for the faint of heart, I gagged audibly at some of the description. Also, a little reminiscent of "True Grit", some good depth & drama mixed in. less

I've read most all of Lansdale's books and he is one unique author; not for the timid.
