review 1: I checked this book out of the library based entirely on the fact that it takes place on my actual birthday. I didn't know anything about it other than that, but I have to say I enjoyed it very much. This book has a lot of witty one liners and funny scenarios. I feel as though the characters are supposed to be sad since they all come from terrible home lives and backgrounds, but they are not wallowing in self pity or depressed about it. They just go about life and accept who they are and where they come from, they bond together and stick up for each other. I liked Karl who is the main character. The story is told from his POV and he is very interesting. He is in this therapy group because his Father is dead and his Mother is an alcoholic hippy who acts more like the child ... moreand he is more like the adult. He takes care of her instead of the other way around, but he never lets it get to him. He still loves her although she drives him crazy, and he is doing his best to follow his Dad's example. He decides this is the year he will be normal which is where we enter the story. This book had a lot of language in it, which I didn't really like and could have gone without, since it is YA I was not expecting it to have so much bad language, but aside from that I found it very entertaining and well-written.
review 2: Holy shit, everyone needs to read this book. It's gritty and you can really relate to the character because not is he funny (this book is so damn quotable) but he actually develops and changes and fucking learns things throughout the book which is more than I can say about some authors these days. It takes place in like the 1960s-70s so there's a lot of racism and homophobia present in the novel even though it really isn't the focus. But, it really give a window into the past and it's just so damn relatable and it really draws you in I mean shit, the hook is right in the title.I honestly cannot say enough good things about this book and I'm recommending it to every I see. Just, Holy shit read it. less

One of the best YA novels I've read. Up there with John Green's books and Please Ignore Vera Dietz.

Lot of cursing and awkward parts, not sure why I finished it, but it was still a decent book
