review 1: Spoiler Alert: This is a nicely imagined story that explains the mystery of Anastasia, the Romanov princess. Georgy, the narrator, is an elderly man, looking back on his life and his marriage to Zoya. Escaping from Bolshevik Russia, they went first to France and then to England, where they have lived ever since, working, raising a family, and trying to keep quiet about their origins because they still fear for their lives. Georgy's story is good historical adventure with lots of details about life in the Romanov family in the last days of its existence. I've said it about The Absolutist and I'll say it again about this book: it reads like a young adult book and could easily be a crossover for 13+ readers who like historical fiction. Excellent writing.
review 2:
... moreThe best book I've ever read, John Boyne is just precious, extremely precise and knows how to link us to the story and the real history of the Russian Imperial Family. I can't believe the book is over, it transfered me to that time like all the action was passing by my eyes. The characters have so much depth, even the one's that are little commented on the book, like Marie and Leo. It is for sure, one of those books that you don't know how to live after reading it. less
