review 1: Noah Barleywater Runs Away by John BoyneThis book,an enticing read, fills the popular, fantasy category on the Bingo Board. The book is about a young boy named Noah Barleywater. Noah's mother is sick and is going to die, and because of this Noah is sad and depressed. He misses the days when he was a little kid, when his mother would take him out to the beach and other exciting adventures. So he decides to run away. During the time he is away from home he meets many strange and interesting characters which make this book a fantasy read. His journey is started off at a small village where he meets an apple tree. By then he is very hungry and there are red, juicy apples on the trees branches. He picks an apple and then the tree gets angry which surprises Noah as he has never se... moreen a talking tree before. Then the people of the village look over at the commotion and see that Noah is stealing the apples. The people of the village start chasing Noah out of the village and he is forced to walk down a long path in search of another village. He finally finds another village and he meets a shop owner who tells him stories about how he used to be a great runner, the best in the land. The shop owner shows Noah everything he knows and shows him how to carve wood and the secrets to it. The experience with the old shop owner makes Noah feel happy and so he decides to go back home to meet his parents again.A character I liked was Noah as he resembled a person like me who likes adventure and learning new things. A memorable moment was when the apple tree got angry at Noah for stealing its apples.I liked the book because the plot was interesting, with many imaginative ideas, and it was generally well written and kept me interested throughout. Although the story was over one day it felt like a week because there were lots of different adventures. Although I enjoyed the book, my only criticism would be that the adventures were a bit too brief and that maybe there could have been a bit more descriptive language.I give the book four stars and would recommend it to other readers of my age.

I have an eight year old boy who has many eight year old friends, none of which are anywhere near this character's level of reasoning. I would rather the main character be 10 to 12, it would seem a bit more believable on the intellectual side and would appeal to an older audience which I would get much more out of the story. Unfortunately I suspect it will be lost as being too mature and a bit dull at times for a younger reader, and a very hard sell for an older child because the main character is so young. Not many older children I know are willing to read a story written about a "little" kid. That said the writing was well done and the lesson held within its pages about life and loss is deeply moving.

Mir hat einfach was gefehlt.

I was expecting more from the man who brought us The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
