review 1: Don't get me wrong - I did like this book. I had it wrapped and under my Christmas tree as soon as it went up. I wanted to wait until I had a whole day or two to savour my new Boyne book. I just didn't adore it as much as The Absolutist, Noah Barleywater runs away or Crippen.I loved the Irishisms, and language throughout the novel. Some people struggle with the flow of a novel that skips back and forward through time, but I believe it makes for more interesting reading, drawing us into the character and his past.I felt for him and his personal turmoil was alive on the page, even though he seemed naive throughout his life. But he was a good man, surrounded by so much hate and venom - some would say rightly so, especially those who were victims of the Catholic Church. How do... more you separate the good from the bad?Especially those who thought they were doing good, but were oblivious to the bad.
review 2: I've read most of John Boyne's books and enjoyed them, but I can't say that I truly enjoyed this one. Very well written but a disturbing subject. I thought from very early on in the book that Father Odran knew what his friend and fellow priest Tom Cardle was up to and consciously decided to say and do nothing. Something he did throughout his life but didn't admit it to himself until after he collected Tom Cardle on his release from prison. Makes you wonder how many more priests have done exactly the same thing. A book that certainly leaves an impression on you. less
