review 1: I was drawn to this because I'm always hoping to discover a new top class golden age detective fiction author, but as always, I was a little disappointed. Compared with Agatha Christie or Dorothy Sayers, the style is pedestrian, the characters don't seem to have much personality, and the police do some incredible things - like accepting somebody's alibi because one person backs it up, and telling witnesses that anything they say will be treated in confidence! But if you don't have high expectations, it's a reasonable read.
review 2: The older style was definitely interesting to me and I enjoyed reading a book with a slower pace. The clues certainly weren't enough for me to guess the villain although I could see they were there after I finished. The last chapt
... moreer surprised me and I found it interesting that this wasn't part of a series but the explanation for that made sense. The Lake District Murder is something I definitely want to read now. less
