Samuel Johnson vs. the Devil
review 1: I love John Connolly's writing, and I've really enjoyed the Samuel Johnson trilogy. This one wasn't my favorite of the three. As other people have pointed out, Samuel was kind of a side character in his own book, and I was curious what happened to some of the characters- such as the dwarves- at the end of the book. That being said, I did enjoy it, and at times it made me laugh out loud. If you haven't read the trilogy and enjoy fantasy humor stories, I highly recommend starting with the Gates and working your way from there.
review 2: When I list my favorite series, the Samuel Johnson Tales by John Connolly lands in the top ten. A fun and educational jaunt into the town of Biddlecombe is an ideal way to spend time and if you react by laughing out loud as I did,
... more good luck explaining why to your friends, family, or strangers. I’d recommend pointing them in the direction of the nearest bookstore and telling them to start with “The Gates.” Samuel, his trusty dog Boswell, and his friends have managed to defeat evil twice. Things have settled down to a nice, though still slightly odd, version of Biddlecombe normal. In all honesty, nothing much is routine, but the small population believes that if they ignore most situations—like disappearing/reappearing statues, a boy and his friends saving the world, crazy scientists working in a sweet shop while spying on the villagers, etc.—then naturally, bad things will just go away. Even those who hide their head in the sand have to face reality at some point. And reality soon knocks when an old monstrosity of a building—one of several designed by the long missing and most definitely dead, Hilary Mould—begins making noise. Construction noise, that is. Wreckit & Sons is under new management and it’s going to be like nothing anyone has seen before. But whatever is bringing Wreckit & Sons back to life is pure evil and she’s got a craving for Samuel Johnson. This time, Samuel and his motley crew aren’t facing Hell. Or even Satan (better known to readers as The Great Malevolence). They are facing the things that scare even the most evil demons and must defeat the Shadows or everyone in the Multiverse will die. Mixing in an ever growing list of truly polite demons, bodiless eyes, dwarves, elves, vampires (not in the suck your blood sense), and more make this and the entire series a treat for readers. Yes, it’s a young adult in every sense of the term and it definitely makes me feel young again. Reviewed by Shannon Raab for Suspense Magazine less
