review 1: Exactly what you want from a rip-roaring, swashbuckling adventure story. It's not often you turn the last page of a book then immediately search Amazon for more titles by the same author. Every character fully realised and well-rounded. Even the most cliched turn of piratical phrase sounds fresh and appropriate. The perfect balance of precise research and rich storytelling. Best thing I've read in quite a while.
review 2: You know what the real problem is with prequels? You already know for the most part what happens to the main characters, who lives and dies, especially when most of them also appear in the book the prequel is based on, as is the case here. There was not a moment of suspense in this whole book for me. I suspect Drake knew this would be a pro
... moreblem and so compensated by amping up the sex and gore. Flint, the only really "new" character of any consequence, is transformed from the bloodthirsty pirate captain most readers of "Treasure Island" probably imagined him to be into some kind of Hannibal Lecter-type psycho. The backstory might be compelling for anyone who is a major fan of "Treasure Island", but otherwise it's hard going. less

Absolutely loved this book. One of these days, I need to get around to reading the sequel!

Very violent, but well written. The author plans a sequel "Pieces of Eight."
