review 1: Well here's a conundrum. It wasn't as good as "THe Last Child" which was one of the best books I've ever read, but wasn't as bad as….well…that's not fair. It's not fair to compare, but these books are by the same author. Hmmm….I don't give away plot, so let me say that the first problem I had with Iron House was a huge mistake in the beginning of the story. A character needs their passport, they contact a friend the day before to have them send it to a secret location. When "Mob" boyfriend finds out the very next morning he realizes their location has been compromised and sure enough here come the hit men. The very next morning. By the time mob boyfriend gets them out of the situation, said character has their passport. Huh? The hit men didn't bring it with them. It'... mores early morning. The mailman didn't show up before the hit men. Stuff like this irritates me, but still I shouldered on. At one point I was ready to put down the book. Too long, too ponderous. Oooo, there's another twist. I was getting bored, but then it picked up. I found it ebbing and flowing like this the rest of the book. I skimmed a lot again, due to the ponderous stuff, and was disappointed because it could have been a contender. It was well written, it was for the most part interesting, but I don't need several plot lines, I don't need dun-dun-dun-dun's all over the place and improbable solutions. Plus, the outcome for Stevan and Jimmy was a bit farfetched. Well, and for Michael too because it just always clicks into place for him, doesn't it? sigh
review 2: This was a larger than life story, so much so that I was always aware that I was reading fiction and never quite lost myself in the book. That being said, it was a very well crafted story that kept me turning the pages to see which way the plot would shift next and enjoying the many robust characters. I would not be surprised to see this as the basis for a movie. The book has a pretty hefty dose of violence, not a good fit for people who try to avoid that in their reading. Thanks, Cheryl, for the recommendation. less
