review 1: a 3.5 actually rather than a 3. This is a wildly inventive tale featuring steam boats, elves, dwarves, hell fire bullet, a world on war more reminiscent of the Wild West and 2 mercenaries who take center stage. The world is very well thought of and sketched as are the 2 characters, one a man of action and the other a cross-breed of dwarf and human, the narrator. The tale is incredibly gripping for the first half of the book and the reason for the lowered rating is cos the 2nd half of the tale becomes more local, more personal compared to the scope that was built up in the first half of the book. While things wrap up in this book, the stage is set for a full blown series to come up from this.
review 2: Maybe more like 3.5... kind of really liked it. preferred th
... moree buildup to the ending as i felt it was a tad rushed. Think it could have used a few more chapters-worth to fill in a bit more historical detail. overall tho, loved the world that has been created and the characters seemed well rounded [shoestring is the man! well, the dwarf... well the half-dwarf.] would probably goto 4star if a sequel digs more into the history and politics etc... less

The one has a shot at being the best fantasy Western I've read so far. Enormous entertainment!
