review 1: This novel is a kind of 1950s noir detective story set in the Deep South, with Cthulhu monsters. I enjoyed the many lovecraft references such as the Quanoon al Islam, (see the story, "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" to learn the true nature of this text). I also really liked the take on Lovecraft's mythos, which seemed to me to be a kind of Lovecraft meets Tim Powers cosmology. I also liked the subtle mythological references, and the cosmically evil R&B music.
review 2: Southern Gods is a very well written first novel. It is the first novel I have read in sometime that I could not put down. Everything about this novel oozed the atmosphere of the time and place. I was drawn into the world of Bull Ingram and didn't want to leave. The only negative aspect for me
... more was the inclusion of the battle between good and evil gods. I tend to prefer when a Mythos story avoids those trappings in favor of sticking with Lovecraft's original idea. However, I still greatly enjoyed this novel and can not wait to read future offerings from John Hornor Jacobs. less
