review 1: I tried twice to read this book. The first time, I only got to page 40. The second time, forced to read more because I was trapped on a plane, I read to page 250. John Irving had been one of my favourite writers. But this piece of work just irritated me so badly. In a large part due to his overuse of parentheses, commas, and repeating obvious statements. Sorry, John, but this book isn't worthy.
review 2: Thought not my absoluate favorite of Irving's novels, this one shares with all of his other lengthy tomes the Dickensian ability to fully enmesh you in the full trajectory of generations of characters. I also loved the self-reflexivity of this particular novel and its ruminations on writing, particularly those related to story and plot. And, as a foodie, ... moreI (of course) loved all of the cooking stuff! If any of these things sound good to you, you're apt to enjoy this. If all of them do, then definitely read it. less
