Simulated Smile

A beautiful wide smile
That’s what the world says I have
I’ve heard them say it so much
I could easily believe it to be true
That I’m a happy, lucky gal

If I didn’t know of the silent sorrows in my soul
The heavy anguish on my shoulders
The silent tears that drip in my core
And the – oh, so clever – way I hide it all
Behind a simulated smile

But keep watching the performance
It keeps the audience
Oblivious
To what goes on backstage
