review 1: This book is NOT FOR CHILDREN!! It is a collection of stories related somehow to The Wizard of Oz. But beware, these are not interesting little children's stories. Some of them are very depressing and cynical. I started, but didn't finish: One Flew Over the Rainbow, Emeralds to Emeralds Dust to Dust and City So Bright. Too disturbing or disgusting or bad language and images. I don't think this is worth the money. Maybe to check out from library and pick and choose the ones you read
review 2: I never thought of myself as a huge Oz fan- I read several of the Baum books and enjoyed them, and maybe a couple of the Thompsons and thought they were okay- and I think the current collection is a nice side-bar to the traditional volumes. The only obvious problem with a w
... morehole book of Oz stories is that you've got a whole book with nothing but Oz stories, so they can wear a bit thin quickly, but there's a very good variety here. I suspect that, like most of the current population, many of the authors included were much more familiar with the film than with Baum's canonical work. Some of the stories stuck with the original and a few branched far afield, such as Seanan McGuire's excellent story, a nice tale by Ken Liu, and the one that I thought was the best of the book by far, "One Flew Over the Rainbow" by Robin Wasserman. It's an excellent piece; it really blew me away... so to speak. There was a long story by Tad Williams that I didn't care for, but the other stories were all enjoyable. Among the more traditional ones that stood out were good stories by C.C. Finlay and Rae Carson, Orson Scott Card, and Jonathon Maberry. less
