review 1: I really enjoyed this book in spite of the fact that the mystery wasn't really 'solved'. The story is based on an actual trial from 1885, and the author does a wonderful job of presenting the case, holes and all, to the reader. Because there were so many holes in the case, I found myself wavering back and forth between believing that the main character was innocent and being certain that he was guilty. It is a wonderful character study, which is what makes it not matter that the guilt or innocence of the main character is uncertain.
review 2: The opening chapter promises a murder mystery that seems interesting in its historical perspective. But then the next chapter takes a completely different twist. And the following one basically grinds the plot to a scre... moreeching halt.I couldn’t continue after that. What I initially found interesting seemed pushed to the side. The characters were flat. The writing was good enough but not anything special. As a whole, it did not work for me. less
