review 1: Oh, Lordie! Couldn't even get to page 7; some people cannot write. "Now his heart is beginning to thump blood through his ears. He has to get out of here." "O Dem golden slippers! Goddam it! Shall we gather at the river. But why would he be thinking of that song and of his baptism in the pond with his brother so long ago? 'Huh?'" As much as I wanted to read local history, this childish attempt was impossible. I'll google the details and call it a day.
review 2: I thought this book was pretty amazing since it was based on an actual case. My only complaint was the detailed descriptions the author gave which caused me to skim over paragraphs. If the author's intent was to leave the reader undecided as to whether or not the accused comitted the murder, he certain
... morely accomplished this. I was convinced of his guilt for most of the story and then I wasn't quite that sure. I do know he did not get a fair trial. I love books that take place in VA especially areas I'm familiar with as in this case Richmond. It also took place after the civil war which I found to be especially interesting. less
