review 1: This book is based on a true story. In the late 1800's, a body was found floating in the town reservoir in Richmond, VA. Originally thought to be a suicide, the dead woman was pregnant and eventually a young attorney was charged with murder. The author created a compelling and plausible back story to augment the actual transcripts from the trial. And despite taking place over 100 years ago, the events have an element of timelessness to them. It made for a decent book club discussion, too.
review 2: I loved the concept - a murder mystery in old Richmond - but I didn't ever fully get into this, or love it. I enjoyed reading the historical bites about Richmond. And I stuck to reading it. But there were times through the middle where I found myself not liking ei
... morether of the main characters. And then in the end I felt like it was a very long book for a very short story. I read it, I liked it, but it could have and should have been so much more, which is disappointing. less
