review 1: We prefer directions, principles, keys, steps. We prefer these things because they leave us in control. If I'm holding the map, I'm still in charge of the trip. I can go where I want to. If I have a guide, I must trust. I must follow. I must relinquish control.God is not much on maps and compasses and coordinates. Life just doesn't work that way. We don't need directions. We need a Guide. (p. 172)
review 2: A solid 4.5 stars. Ortberg begins this book by confessing that his faith has never been without doubt. In fact, his faith has only grown as strongly as it has because it was fueled by doubt. To some that may sound counter-intuitive. To others it may sound weak. But with the voice of a pastor, Ortberg shares why/how doubt can be a healthy aspect of our growi
... moreng trust in Christ. There are a lot of aspects of this book that I really like. I like that Ortberg shows us examples of doubt throughout Scripture, both Old and New Testaments. I like that a section of this book is devoted to identifying when doubt goes from a healthy to an unhealthy form (not to mention unproductive). I like that Ortberg speaks conversationally and with humor (so I always felt at ease even though doubt can be a thorny subject). And finally, I like that Ortberg shares stories from his decades in ministry so the hypothetical, philosophical issues are always tied back to real life scenarios. This book will help many feel unburdened and draw closer to God. less
