review 1: ini juga, sampul edisi indonesianya kurang menarik dan bahkan kurang berkesinambungan dengan buku pertamanya. menurutku semestinya lebih terasa fantasinya.anyway karena suka sama seri 1 jadi tetep aja buku 2 ini wajib baca. sayang keluarnya lama bgt ternyata ya. untung aku baca dlm waktu berdekatan hehehe karena telat sebenarnya. di buku dua giliran michael yg menemukan kitab yang harus dijaganya. yakni kitab kehidupan. brrr. seram ya. dan pembaca ga bakal menduga deh kitab ini spt apa dan apa saja yg bisa dilakukannya. seru bgt pokoknya. ada salah satu dr ketiga saudara ini yg meninggal dunia. lalu ada yg dibangkitkan. ada peri. ada naga. lengkaaap. tapi semuanya in a way that you will never imagine before.dengan demikian penulisnya berhasil menciptakan dunia fantasinya s... moreendiri. dan kita pun sukses masuk n berpetualang di dalamnya. can't wait for the third book and the movie of the first book.
review 2: Talk about an emotionally-driven, action-packed story. Each chapter seems to pull your heart strings taut with sentiment and with anticipation at what’s about to happen next. I honestly felt emotionally drained after finishing the book, but I very much enjoyed the story and character growth. I think the flow of the different storylines was well executed. There are so many character moments driven by love and hope. Many moments in the book played out cinematically in my mind’s eye. I felt the author did a wonderful job visualizing the different realms and bringing them to life in poignant and intellectual ways. Michael’s character became the best of the book. I loved Michael’s discovery about not needing the pen. I thought that was a wonderful twist to the power of the book and his control over it versus its control over him. I also loved how the author brought dwarf-loving Michael face-to-face with those “silly” and much-laughed-at elves. There were some fun (and emotional) scenes where Michael had to reconcile his previous beliefs to the reality before him. The book is always poised on a thin edge, yet the author masterfully keeps everything balanced. Each character, setting, and obstacle has opposing forces which must be grappled with. Everything in the storyline had two sides to it. I think this is most embodied in the dragon/princess, but there are many subtle dances throughout the story. Characters must look in themselves to find strength when they cannot rely on others to save them: self-doubt or self-sufficiency? Battles are waged both in the past and the present against the Dire Magnus. Elves are both vane yet fiercely loyal and strong fighters. Rafe is driven by both his love and his hatred. Emma is both a spitfire and deeply vulnerable. The only thing that bugged me was the complete LOTR rip off when Michael awoke in the elf village with a smoking Dr. Pym/the old mentor figure sitting by his bedside who had disappeared earlier in the storyline and explains what happened while everyone was separated. I found that to be a disappointing element to an otherwise original plot. I did not get the explanation of how the Dire Magnus pulls his previous self from different parallel worlds that have happened in the past. If it’s happened in the past, how can he pull someone from it without there being consequences? Wouldn’t that mess things up/the time-travel “grandfather clause?” I mean, it’s an intriguing start to an idea, but it’s not one that fully explained its nuances and consequences. And it’s kind of “dire” to think that what happened before will happen again and has happened multiple times already. So we have no control over what will happen in our future because it’s already happened in the past? Not buying it.After everything that happened and everything hinted at to come, I cannot imagine how long book 3 is going to be, but I’ll gladly read it! This next time, Emma is up to bat along with what will happen when the three books are finally together again. I look forward to more Emma and Gabriel moments and a lot of family ties that will strengthen the siblings as the adversity mounts. less
