review 1: I really enjoyed this book. It is a little predictable in places, but I think the author does a brilliant job of creating this fiction out of very real and tragic events. I think that the era, the location, the perspectives of the characters and their ideas and way of thinking at that time have been well researched and represented so well in fictional form. As the author is a journalist and most of his writing is non fiction (this may be his only work if fiction?) I think that his transition from non fiction to fiction has been excellent.
review 2: A wonderful book which I thoroughly enjoyed. Quite amazing that it's based on a true story, some parts remind me of my mothers own memories when she was escaping with her family from the Japanese up the Chinwin on a ... moreraft with the car! I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a different and unusual story for a change from the norm.
