review 1: LET THE DEVIL SLEEP. (2012). John Verdon. ****.This was Verdon’s third adventure for his retired cop, Dave Gurney. He and his wife had moved to Upstate New York to live in the peace and tranquility that he thought he deserved. Like most retired people, however, Dave began to get bored very quickly. When a young woman journalism student approached him and offered his a job as a consultant to a study she was conducting on the effects on the survivors of murder victims, he agreed – after a token resistance. The group of remaining relatives that this woman was going to focus on were close family members of people who were killed ten years ago by a serial killer who came to be known as the “Good Shepherd.” There were six victims, all shot using a large caliber p... moreistol while driving their luxury Mercedes. The killer got his name from a ‘manifesto’ he wrote and sent in to the police and the press. Even after ten years, the cops were clueless, although the killer was almost captured in a foiled chase by one of the homicide police. Verdon uses all the tricks he knows to build tension in this tale, and keep the reader guessing as to whom the potential killer might be. Of course, he manages to put Gurney in the way of harm several time, too, just to keep our interest. Verdon has written an impressive set of thrillers, that are both intelligent and tricky. Sometimes he goes over the top with his characters, but you get so caught up in the story that those go right by the reader. Recommended.
review 2: Отдавна не бях чела толкова добър трилър. Увлекателен, държащ в напрежение, без да стига до крайности, с пълнокръвни образи. Е, убиецът, когото узнаваме в последните страници от книгата, беше малко неочакван и в известна степен неубедителен, но, честно казано, криминалната интрига не бе основното, което ме привлече в стила на автора. По-скоро начинът, по който пише, умението да създава реална, някак близка атмосфера на случващото се, психологическите аспекти в изграждането на образите. Цялостното ми усещане за книгата, колкото и да е нетипично за трилър, бе за спокойствие, умереност, тихо напрежение. Хареса ми. Със сигурност ще потърся и други книги на автора - явно съм започнала от последната, но ще се върна и към първите две от серията за детектив Гърни. less
