review 1: Agee, J. (2011). My rhinoceros. New York: scholastic. The story begins with a little boy who has bought a rhinoceros but claims that he did not know what he was getting himself into. At first he seemed like a good pet. But then the little boy started realizing that the pet did not do anything. So then the little boy called a rhinoceros expert and told her there was a problem. So when she came she kept asking the little boy what was wrong. When she would keep asking different things and the little boy kept saying "no". Finally the boy told her that he does not do anything. Then the expert told him that they in fact do two things. One they pop balloons, and two they poke holes in kites. So he took his pet somewhere that he would possibly pop balloons and poke holes in kit... morees. But they went there and nothing happened! After that the little boy began second guessing if he made a good decision in choosing a rhinoceros. He began to wonder if he should have chose a different animal. Then all of a sudden there was a robbery, and the bad guy was getting away in a hot air balloon. The little boy quickly pointed at it and told his rhinoceros "pop". All of the sudden the rhinoceros flew up in the air and popped the balloons! Then he told him to poke a hole in kite that had the other robber in it. Once again he saved the day! After all was said and done, the little boy decided his animal was special and that he would not get a different one after all! I thought this story was very cleaver. I rate it 5/5. It is appropriate for children 5-7.
review 2: You'd think having a rhinoceros as a pet would be so cool! But the narrator's rhinoceros won't fetch, or roll over, or anything. He won't even poke holes in kites or pop balloons, and even rhino experts agree that's what they should be doing. A twist ending resolves everything quite nicely.Very cartoony illustrations accompany the text to good effect. This book would be excellent for a story time for preschoolers or older. less
