review 1: “The Retired Kid” by Jon Agee is a picture book for children in the primary age group ranging from ages five to eight. “The Retired Kid” tells the story of Brain, who decides he is finished with school after eight years and ready to retire. Brian packs up his things and moves to Florida to a retirement community, but comes to realize maybe he wasn't meant to retire just yet. The author took the silly things children sometimes say into its literal context which is pretty clever. The story was short, but without feeling like you missed anything, and which is good read for younger readers who are starting to read on their own. I only gave this book four stars because the drawings were just kind of plane and dual colored, which is a big contributing factor when I’m r... moreating a book. This is a good book to show younger readers that despite the fact they have to come to school everyday, their life isn't’t that bad. The theme in a way was don’t grow up too fast, which I think especially today is a big problem. This would be a book I read out loud at story time, and could have a silly discussion about after. Maybe asking the children what they would do if they were retired. I would keep this book on the shelf for students to read on their own as well because most pages are rather short and it’s a good book to start with.
review 2: Admittedly, I thought adults might get more of a chuckle out of this than kids. So I was surprised that my six-year old got the moral of this story and made connections ("Rockumentaries are those boring shows Pappy watches"). So all in all, a nice book for a laugh and to pull out when junior starts to whine about how rough life is. And bonus points: getting to use my old man voice while reading a picture book. less

peh. The concept of retirement was lost on my little girls and then they lost interest.

Being a kid is hard work..., tongue in cheek humor, with illustrations to match.
