review 1: This book is intended for children ages 4-8 and I feel that the text is perfect for a beginning reader with only a few difficult words. The story is about a young boy who gets a rhinoceros fro a pet . The boy is sad that the rhino does nothing at all. He lays around and sleeps all day. He tries to get him to fetch , but the rhino just looks at the boy. So the boy calls in a rhino specialsit who says all rhinos do is pop balloons and poke holes in kites. The book is very funny and by the end we learn that this rhino can do something special , he can fly! This book has such imagination and children could do their own writtings following this book where they could pretend they had an exotic pet that has an amazing trick. great book overall and very good for children in k-2nd ... moregrade.
review 2: Very fun new picture book from Jon Agee about a boy who gets a rhinoceros as a pet. He's disappointed because the rhino doesn't do much--he doesn't play fetch, roll over, or play much. But the rhino saves the day when robbers try to escape via a kite and a balloon, making use of the rhino's peculiar talents. This reminded me a lot of Walter the Farting Dog, another pet who doesn't fit in until he saves the day from robbers. I love the very simple but expressive pictures, and kids will undoubtedly be tickled by the wry humor of the story. Perfect for the 4-8 year old crowd. I'm sure it would be a great read-aloud as well. less
