review 1: This is the first book by Clinch that I have read. I like it, but I was not in love iwth it. Clinch writes compellingly and in a way that moves the reader forward, all of which is to the good. The characters are interesting. The plot is the star of the book, so much so that the emotional impact is less than the action. I felt distanced from the people in the story because of this, and I don't want to feel distanced. I want to be immersed in their lives and to care a lot about them. I recognized these people, but I was not drawn into their lives and stories. Nonetheless, I would recommend it.
review 2: A thinly fictionalized and deeply disturbing portrayal of three brothers suffering and dying on a dairy farm in the 20th century. The author was successfu
... morel in showing the brothers as both repulsive and sympathetic, but I found the multiple viewpoints and shifts in perspective jarring and detracting from the overall story. The visual depiction of the farm was masterly but the plot dragged (particularly the side plot about the nephew) and the ending was a bit abrupt. less
