review 1: Not being a dog person, I had my doubts about this book about a farmer and his dog surviving a snowstorm on a remote farm. But since it met at least 2 challenges, I decided to give it a try. I'm SO glad I did! What a totally wonderful book. I would rate it more than 5 stars if I could. I became engrossed right from the beginning. The author writes the story from the viewpoint of the dog. What? Yes, I was skeptical too, but it was very believable. The things that the dog thought and did made so much sense and seemed so realistic that I was sucked right in to the mindset. It was fascinating to get inside the dog's head and imagine how she would think and respond to each situation. Although the reader doesn't get to know the farmer Sam all that well, he is a solid ... morecharacter who is understood completely by Rose the dog. Rose is the star of the book, and we get to know her very well. Although this book is an animal story, it is very definitely about relationships and families and love. Very moving. I loved it and will definitely read more by this author.
review 2: If you have ever owned a dog, or more correctly, had a dog decide that you were theirs, you will enjoy this book. If you have ever appreciated an animal that understands and uses its talents, and its heart, you will enjoy this book. If you have ever believed that animals are more than just that, this book will speak to you.I was blessed enough to have a cattle dog decide I was his. And this book, the actions of Rose chronicled by author Katz, and her relationship to her humans are so true to working dogs. His depictions of the farm animals and how they socialize with each other, and with humans was amazing. While I can't speak about cows and sheep, I do understand chickens and equines, cats and dogs. This was read in one day at the beach. Many tears were shed. Worth it. less
