review 1: Jon Katz’s “Rose in a Storm” is a novel of love and labor, a work of impressive proportions with regard to its perceptive qualities. Rose, a border collie/shepherd mix, belongs to Sam, who owns a Granville farm. Together they keep the farm running and handle the inevitable situations and complications which arise. The latest crisis involves the arrival and long duration of a colossal blizzard which threatens not only the livestock but Sam and Rose as well, leaving the border collie to fight out the storm and care for the animals herself in the midst of crippling weather and predators. Despite her extraordinary endurance, even Rose struggles as conditions deteriorate, and her success and survival become increasingly dubious.Readers will marvel at the truly remarkable ... moreintuitiveness of Rose, emblematic of working and herding dogs the world over whose talents are often overlooked or taken for granted. “Rose in a Storm” provides an in-depth vision of life through the eyes of these magnificent creatures and their innate adaptability. Using simple yet passionate language, Katz allows readers to see the world as a working dog might, tackling obstacles with diligence and incredible intelligence and understanding. This novel, evoking awe—and, at times, tears—may likely prove to be an inspiration for greater persistence and a greater appreciation of our four-legged companions.
review 2: Hang on, let me just faint for a second at the idea of a dog story being written in 2010 for adults and actually featuring the dog...I loved this. I see some of his unsentimental philosophies on dog ownership still bled through, but within 20 pages all that was forgotten as I got swept away by the book exceeding my expectations. Loved that most of it was from Rose's point of view, but that where we got to hear from Sam, it enriched what we had learned (and/or made me pine for Katie). The setting fascinated and I fell in love with all the other animals too. If he could just quit with the memoirs and focus all his energies on more novels like this, I would be an extremely happy camper, because that was better than anything else I've ever read from him. less
