review 1: This book is about a fish who steals a hat from a whale and tries to get away with it This cute yet simple book is great of teaching children about not stealing. In the end of the book the whale gets his hat back and the book ends. This lesson teaches children that steal is not the appropriate choice. I placed this book into my shelf for children's pictures books. I placed it there since the book was made for children in mind. I would use this book in a kindergarten through second grade lesson.
review 2: In class we discussed the importance of the end pages having illustrations. In Klassen’s book, the beginning and end pages have monochromatic seaweed. This begins the creation of the setting. It shows that the story is set in a dark place, hinting how the mo
... moreod will be. Right off the bat the story begins with a fish swimming in a dark, black environment, looking back but swimming forward. We are introduced to the main character, the fish with the stolen hat. We are then introduced to the other main character who is a very large fish that is sleeping without a hat. Throughout the book, children can imagine what the fish is thinking or going to do based on the eye movement of the fish, the movement of seaweed, and the direction of air bubbles. For instance, you could guess that the big fish has woken up from the large open eye, looking for his hat when its eye is facing up, and mad when his eye is squinted and facing forward, like it’s determined to find out who stole his hat. The story has a sense of humor that children will enjoy. The big fish realizes its hat is gone and begins swimming after the little fish. A crab tells the big fish which direction with little fish went. Meanwhile, in the text the little fish says that the big fish won’t find him and that he will go in the seaweed to hide. The reader is left wondering what happens when the last illustration is the big fish headed into the seaweed. The following image is only the seaweed, just like the end pages. Next, a large fish tail is shown in the opposite direction, leaving the crab with large eyes. The very last illustration is of the large fish sleeping with its hat on. This Is Not My Hat leaves an open interpretation for children to make as to what happens to the little fish. It also conveys a message to children that stealing is not okay and that the victim can get whatever is stolen back from the thief. It opens the question of ethics (what is right and wrong) to students, too. less

I love this Caldecott so much! The story is narrated by a small fish who stole a hat from a big fish. The small fish rambles hilariously on about how the big fish would never find out where the hat was even if he did notice it was gone. The little fish runs into a little crab who swears to be quiet about where he is going. He speaks about how the hat fits him better anyway then finally gets to where the plants are big, tall, and close together so he can be hidden. Little does he know the crab sold him out and the big fish is actually right behind him. The illustrations show the parts about the big fish and crab with no words. It was fun to read knowing that the little fish was so confident in thinking he was getting away with it! Books like this one really show how easily illustrations can tell a story even better than the words. This book would be a really fun way of learning about stealing. I remember in elementary school kids would steal things out of each other's desks and they would always be caught with what they stole and have to give it back. There is a lesson to be learned and that is you cannot get away with everything! Klassen, J. (2012). This is not my hat (1st ed.). Somerville, Mass.: Candlewick Press.

This is Not my Hat, is about a little fish who steals a hat and likes it. He goes around the sea finding other animals telling them that it is not his hat but he likes wearing it anyway. As he goes about he is being chased by another fish who the hat belongs to. Eventually the little fish is eaten by the bigger fish and suffers the consequences of his actions. This book playfully shows readers the importance of respecting others and doing right by others. It shows young readers that stealing is not okay.

This book is an excellent example of why picture books are the best type of book.
