review 1: This book is about a small fish that has stolen a small hat from a lager fish that is sleeping. He is so certain that he will get away with taking the hat. He knows it’s stealing but justifies why he took it because it was too small for the larger fish. The larger fish wakes up and notices his hat is gone and goes to find the small fish that stole his hat. The smaller fish makes it to the reeds where he can hide from the big fish. The big fish follows after him into the reeds and when he comes out of the reeds the big fish is wearing his small hat. I gave this book a rating of 5 because the illustrations are wonderful and humorous. The expressions of the big fish and how the text fits so well with the actions of the fish make to story so whimsical. It’s a simple read b... moreut it’s done in such a creative way that I think it is a story I will always remember because of the naughty little fish. I would recommend this book for ages 3 to 7 because the story is short so I will keep a younger child's attention and the vocabulary is simple enough that I could also be read by a beginner reader. It helps that this book is also amusing for adults.
review 2: This is by far one of my favorite children's books, and I loved it so much that I had to buy a copy for my future classroom. The story begins with the image of a very small fish wearing a hat, accompanied on the adjacent page by the words "This hat is not mine. I just stole it," and already the reader is intrigued. It is a book of very few words, made up of short, effective sentences that get straight to the point. This book is a perfect example of the fact that pictures and words are of equal importance in a picture book, because both are utilized equally to tell the story. This is a story about a small fish that steals a hat from a big fish while he is sleeping. The small fish swims from page to page, thinking that he will get away with this dirty deed, but because of the foreshadowing images in the book the reader knows differently. The small fish plans to hide "where the plants are big and tall and close together," and thinks that the big fish will not know it was him who took his hat. The reader follows the small fish's unknowing journey, and the big fish's hot pursuit of his hat. The ending of the book is smart and clever, and without any text, Klassen sums it up effectively. The last page is an image of the big fish sleeping soundly, with his hat on his head. One thing I find unique about the book is that the two main characters, the big fish and the small fish, are never really captured on the same page. The illustrator uses subtle placement and facial expressions to help the plot progress, and to tell a gripping story. I love that the pages are all black, creating a contrast between the focal images and the background. Black is also fitting because the book is set deep in the ocean, where there is no light. I think the images are clever and align absolutely perfectly with the text on each page. The whole thing is very simple, but genius. This book is fitting for children of all ages. The language is simple, making it accessible to very young children. The images mirror the simple text, and the characters have a lot of personality without any real characterization via text. This book would also be appealing to older children because they will be able to truly understand the humor of it all. I have truly never experienced a book like this one. less

This illustrations in this book are very simple but still have a lasting impact on the story being told. The text in this picture book tells you one story while the illustrations tell you a completely other story. The small fish steals the big fish's hat while he was sleeping. However the big fish is really awake and sees him take it. The whole time through the book the small fish thinks he is going to get away with it but in reality the big fish knows he took it. This book would be a good book to bring into the classroom because it shows the complexity of picture books to children. It also teaches the students a lesson to not steal and to just try to do the right thing because eventually the truth will come out.

This is Not My Hat by John Klassen is great book about a little fish that snatches a hat from atop a large sleeping fish’s head. The story is told from the little fish’s perspective, who thinks he has gotten away with the stolen hat and will not be found. The pictures of this book however show a different story. As the little fish confidently states that the crab that spotted him will not give away his whereabouts the illustration shows the crab pointing the bigger fish in the little crooks direction. As the little fish hides in the tall thick plants he is sure the big fish will not find him but the illustrations then show the big fish swimming back with his hat.

This book amuses me far too much for its genre but my son (3.5) was not impressed so 3 stars only.

Klassen's books are always so hilarious and devious, but cute... fun to read at bedtime.
