review 1: This is a phenomenal book, a detailed, painstaking and fascinating delve into wargaming and RPGs. I imagine that it is invaluable to the enthusiast.Alas, I'm not anywhere like such an enthusiast, and I doubt I truth that I ever was. I suspect I bought this (a year or two ago) hoping it would be much re about board games. And there are some - chess and Diplomacy get a good look in, but ultimately this one wasn't for me.But if it is for you, go for it and you may well be delighted.
review 2: The title of this book may be a bit broad. Though it does cover the history of wargaming, and does dig into the history of Chess and its many variations, it is all in the service of giving you the history of Dungeons & Dragons. This is very much a history of how the Fantasy R
... morePG (and D&D in particular) came to be.In light of that, there's a certain demographic that will definitely enjoy this book. If you once played, or currently play, Dungeons & Dragons or other Fantasy RPG, and you enjoy well-researched, heavily-footnoted historical texts, you will enjoy this book. That's an "and", there, not an "or". I think you would really need to meet both of those criteria or you'll stop caring somewhere in the middle of section 2.I really enjoyed it, though. less

Fascinating, but extremely dry and long. I enjoyed it but it was a bit of a marathon.
Caraschristie
An academic paper on the history leading up to the creation of Dungeons & Dragons.
Amali96
very good book if you are interested in the history of D&D.
