review 1: By now, most everyone has heard the term "flipped classroom" but not everyone understands what that means. This short informative book provides background, definitions, and examples. I appreciate the authors' candor in saying that this worked for them (they team teach their classes). They do not come across as educational experts whose format is the only one that will work. Rather, they encourage educators to find what works for them, and they are honest in admitting that this approach takes lots of work to set up and maintain. But, from the few teachers I have observed flipping their classrooms, it's worth the endeavor.
review 2: I heard Jonathan Bergmann in person last week, and I had no idea what I was in for. I had only a vague knowledge about the flipped
... moreclassroom idea and what it entailed. It sounded kind of intriguing and one teacher at my school had been practicing it. Little did I know that I was about to hear about it from the mouth of one of the originators. Mr. Bergmann laid out his case for flipping the classroom very elegantly and said one of the most poignant things I've heard at a professional development session. He asked why we became teachers. Didn't we become teachers because we wanted to interact with our students and help them learn, basically be their guide toward knowledge? Oh yes, he had me then. This book in written in a very easy to read and conversational style about what the flipped classroom is, the benefits of implementing it, and how to do it. It also includes a similar discussion of the "updated" version of this called flipped mastery. For teachers, I cannot recommend this highly enough. The authors are very honest about how they implemented it, what went wrong, and what suggestions they can make to help you be successful. I just love how real this book is and how willing they are to admit that this is not the answer to everything, but it is how they answered the question "What is best for kids?". It left me inspired and eager to try it, not only for the method itself, but for the other things you could do with your class time if direct instruction didn't need to happen nearly daily in class. The biggest hurdle I would imagine most people will have (including me) is the technology dimension of that and I feel it was adequately addressed, but I'll still need to do more research about what technology and I need to know and how to use it. Another small complaint about the book is that there is a lot of repetition between the flipped classroom chapters and the flipped mastery classroom chapters so you might want to skip from time to time. Overall, I think every educator should take a good look at this small book of important ideas and try to decide if this is something that could work for them. less
