review 1: I enjoyed reading this book and thoroughly enjoyed the style (which is a big reason that I read fiction). Although I felt that the characters were not developed to any degree. It's as if you looked at a Ralph Lauren Polo ad, showing a rich smiling family, and you had to create one sentence descriptions about each person in the picture. You'd probably be close to the book's characters. SPOILER Father -- wildly successful with no real social depth. Mother -- beautiful beyond age and not really caring for others. Daughter -- bored eventually gets into drugs. Son -- trying to go it alone. That's about it. But the book really isn't about character development, it's about looking through a window to a world that most of us aren't part of. I'm glad that I read it, but I'm not su... morere how quickly recommend it to others. Question -- talk about lack of plot development - just gloss over the man (father) on the top floor of that swanky teenage riot party? And I don't mean to get all Hallmark or Dr. Phil here, but Cynthia's treatment of her extended family was so cruel and disenchanting I can't imagine anyone having sympathy for her. *** My first Goodreads review ***
review 2: This was an interesting topic- a "perfect" couple- high school sweethearts, so compatible, so in tune with each other, unwaivering in their goals, so confident of their success in life. And so it is: perfect kids, no infidelity, stay at home mom, climbing the success ladder as the husband becomes the boss's favourite and potential heir to the business. The husband begins fraudulent insider trading on the side and amasses fortunes- everything is acheived in their dreams - they build many international charities -never looking back just moving doggedly forward amassing more and isolating themselves as their only social unit with little contact with others including past family members. The author sheds some light on the effect on the children who might cocoon themselves in the same mode or succumb to indulgences such as drugs but the portrayal is shallow and unsatisfying to the reader. The couple never gets caught or have to pay for their crimes and life goes on.For me, while interesting, I didn't get any satisfaction from the story or find any point to these characters or their story but maybe that is the point- that's just who they are. less

****+ - Again, for Jonathan Dee, the only problem is that the book is too short.
