review 1: My first book that I have read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed this novel that describes a modern day family complete with crisis, separation, guilt and drama. The characters were believable and the entire book was well written from start to finish. I was engaged from page one and anxious to finish it to see how it all would be resolved. That is a sign of a good book. At least in my humble opinion. Will definitely be on the lookout for another books by this author.
review 2: I love Jonathan Dee's novels for their wry, graceful, authoritative narrators and their engagement with contemporary social issues--often those to do with image, advertising, late capitalism, and spin. They (the novels) each feel like the working-out of a "what if?" in the most ... moreengaging way. In A Thousand Pardons, a woman whose marriage has just imploded (quite spectacularly) and who needs to support herself and her daughter, finds that her one talent seems to be getting prominent people involved in some sort of scandal to ... apologize. (This is possibly the power of a deflected wish to have her husband do this same.) The results are surprising, and yet also imperfect. Some difficulties with the daughter and surprising behavior by the ex add zest to the tale. less
