review 1: I really feel like I should have walked away liking this more, but for the most part these essays came off as mostly bland, or self-indulgent. Farther Away was easily the strongest, and Autobiographical Fiction was another strong essay... if only the rest would follow suit. I think a big problem is that Franzen has a tendency to be one of these "intellects" that dismisses, rather than logically argues against, his opponents; or worse, he simply assumes that the beauty of a bird is inherent to all of humanity -- and birds are beautiful, but what are we, as readers, to do with this assumptive style of writing?Unlike Freedom I am glad to have read Farther Away, but I wouldn't put it in the category of recommended reading.
review 2: Sembra facile passare senza solu... morezione di continuità dalla narrativa alla saggistica (ampiamente intesa). Dalla più recente alla più lontana, qui abbondano tracce del Franzen più personale: la pervasività dei cellulari, la perfezione grammaticale, il rapporto con genitori e fratello, la passione salvifica per il bird-watching.
