review 1: I only really trust fiction reviews written by actual fiction writers. Whether or not I enjoy their fiction is irrelevant. In English, we don't have a word for this but we should: the pleasure that comes from wanting to love something solely because someone shared their love of it with us. What I love most about Franzen is that he knows what needs to be said because he knows why I'm reading. And I don't say that lightly. I say it with firm conviction. Franzen is less of a fiction writer than he is a lifelong student of the American reading republic. In fact, what I like best about reading Franzen's reviews is that he sees us as citizens of our own nation, with flags and esoteric symbology, our own constellations of significance, to whom he must somehow both serve and repre... moresent, unsure of where to place his feet.
review 2: I absolutely loved this book and I actually already went back and read portions of it. The essays are awesome. I also got some good ideas from the book of other authors I would like to read. Franzen writes one of his essays about Alice Munro and I've read two of her books in the past week. There is also some good writing in the book about David Foster Wallace, if anyone is a fan of his. I will definitely read this entire book again at some point. less

A mixed bag but as always with Jonathan Franzen there are some thoughts worth reading.

Franzen is funny and endearing in the same way as the other cranky people in my life.

worth it for the Munro essay alone.
