review 1: Well told with a lot of momentum. This could have been a kind of detailed, hard to follow story with vague, institutional characters, but it's a very well done book and reads like an epic magazine article. I mean that in a good way! Anyway, I failed to get through Fallen Giants, the history of Himalayan Mountaineering. This book offers a nice capsule review of the same history, and traces the legacy of attitudes and cultural quirks of mountaineers in a way that I found very satisfying, which may just mean 'superficial', so there's me. The more I read about HImalayan mountaineering, the more I think the only humans drawn to it are total, total assholes. International asshole convention up there. All the time.
review 2: This is a very interesting book about the t
... moreerrible human rights situation in Tibet and a the murder of a Tibetan refugee by Chinese soldiers that was witnessed by western climbers attempting to summit Cho Oyu in 2006. I really enjoy books about mountain climbing and this was certainly a different twist on that subject. At its heart, this book is really more about the oppression of the people in Tibet by the Chinese than it is about mountain climbing. I didn't know much about Tibet before reading this book and it made me much more aware of that situation and made me contemplate things like the fact that no one was bothered by having the Olympics in Beijing in 2008 despite China's record of human rights abuses. This is a well written book which focuses on the personal stories of several of the refugees, which makes the book more interesting. The stories of these people who risked so much to get out of Tibet are truly inspirational. less
