review 1: This beautifully written book transported me back in time to the days of slavery in the deep South, with it's tale of Granada, a young girl who learns what it means to heal others and to be truly free. I really liked the how the narrative shifted between two time periods, weaving characters together in a subtle way. The ending was very satisfying and the characters so realistic that by the end of the book I felt like I knew them personally.
review 2: The story of a young black slave, told from the girl's point of view. Set in the days of Plantations and slave holders, breeding the slaves, treating them like animals. It was horrifying but struck a true vein. The story was of the entire life of this young girl, also involving "magic", and "seeing" into the min... moreds of people. It was an interesting book, at times reminded me of Faulkner, but it broke down toward the end. I was disappointed in the final picture. less
