review 1: As with all short story collections, there is a mix of wonderful and wise and WTF. If you are skimming, my absolute, hands down favorites in the book are "The Cartographer Wasps and the Anarchist Bees" by E. Lily Yu - I wasn't ready for this one to end. Catherynne M. Valente's "White Lines on a Green Field" is what happens when folklore comes to the 21st century; it's really sexy too. And Michael Swanwick's "The Dala Horse" is incredible, folklore of the future. Paul McAuley's "The Choice" is also really good.
review 2: Like any anthology, some stories I really liked, others not so much - hence the 3 stars as a middle ground. However, I do think that many of the stories that I didn't much like were a question of the type of fiction I like, not that they we... morere poorly written. Just not my type of story. Overall, I'd recommend the book - the stories are very diverse, so if you like sci/fi and fantasy, you're likely to find some stories you like. I've found a few authors to read more of and any time I find a couple new authors, it's definitely a win! less
