review 1: This was great. I mean, thank you JCP because it takes courage to write something like that, something so intense and dignified, warming and chilling at the same time. It's a story that has to end this way to respect the characters, especially Eddie, the protagonist, who's in a hospice waiting to die. It would have been good to wrap everything in a pink bubble and grant everyone their wishes, but it would have been unimpressive and, I feel, false. Since we also have a big piece of Chance in this installment, it was interesting to see him out of his depth, almost unbalanced. It was moving, and sad, but it wasn't hopeless. It was gracious. And dignified, again. It was about choices, and acceptance. Eddie is one of the most decent characters I've ever read and it might sound ... morecrazy, I think I'm mourning him with this review. It made an emotional mess of me.
review 2: The premise behind this series is pretty cute. Chance is some sort of magical man/being and he has a chocolate confectionery called Sweets for the Sweet and seems to be some sort of mystical matchmaker. In this installment, we finally get to learn more about Chance. Chance's latest assignment is Eddie Flynn, a patient at a hospice who is counting down his final days. Chance is waiting to learn who the man is that he will need to "nudge" towards Eddie to give him a chance at love, but he hasn't encountered Eddie's "other" yet. In the interim, Chance gives Eddie his pen and Eddie discovers that the pen is magic....what will Eddie do with this discovery? Will he rewrite history? This was my my favorite short so far. Maybe it was because I finally learn more about Chance. I liked Eddie and I thought his situation was moving, and I was able to connect with him on some level and sympathize with him. I also really enjoyed the ending. I don't want to give any spoilers, but while it may not be the typical ending that people would expect, I was satisfied with it. less
