review 1: It's a lovely coffee table book. The locations are beautifully shot and the dancers have such poise. The photos are grouped under themes. The only down side is the repetition of poses. There are a lot of the same poses and it highlights when it doesn't work (a guy at a theme park, a NASA engineer going to work and a runner training are all in the same pose in different sections). Some of the poses don't work for the situation but are rather the dancer showing of a difficult pose (the woman studying in an ivy covered window) or the photographer had captured the moment with great timing. I also liked that I recognized a few dancers from So You Think You Can Dance (Ellenore and Alex Wong) and there is also Bebe Neuwirth is a lovely photograph.
review 2: The picture
... mores in this book are really cool. There isn't one that isn't interesting, though some are more clever than others. However, I think the pictures suffer a little for being all together in one volume. If I saw any one of these framed in an exhibit or in someone's house, I'd think, "What a great picture!" Putting them all together, though, and their similarities are highlighted. For instance, pgs 112 & 113 feature "To the Moon" and "Fill 'Er Up" - photos of men leaping into the air in a running position, one in front of a NASA building and the other in front of a gas station - the same basic pose in 2 different locations. In fact, that pose shows up a lot. The repetition dilutes the awesomeness. Also, Matter has some brief essays on themes like "grieving", "working", "playing", etc. - all of them short and probably not as deep as he thinks they are. My favorite shots are the ones where the dancers leapt in a way that makes them appear to be floating. I also liked the part in the back where Matter gives vignettes about some of the photos and what it took to get them. less
