review 1: I've loved every book by Boyden, and this one has now supplanted Three Day Road as my favorite. This book is a vivid, no-holds-barred tragedy that likely occurred thousands of times over during the course of the violent throes of of early contacts between Europeans and North America's indigenous people. I highly recommend it to anybody looking for a balanced perspective on the historical forces the shaped the current politics of aboriginal affairs in Canada, or to anybody looking for a great, gripping, well-written and researched read.
review 2: This was chosen by CBC for Canada reads so naturally I thought it would be dull, by I was completely wrong.This is really an exciting account of the lives of native peoples (Huron and Iroquois) during the period when E... moreuropeans are encroaching on their territories. The depictions of violence and torture seem extreme and I am not sure if they are historically accurate, but they do make it more interesting to read, in my opinion. less
