review 1: I've loved every book by Boyden, and this one has now supplanted Three Day Road as my favorite. This book is a vivid, no-holds-barred tragedy that likely occurred thousands of times over during the course of the violent throes of of early contacts between Europeans and North America's indigenous people. I highly recommend it to anybody looking for a balanced perspective on the historical forces the shaped the current politics of aboriginal affairs in Canada, or to anybody looking for a great, gripping, well-written and researched read.
review 2: This was chosen by CBC for Canada reads so naturally I thought it would be dull, by I was completely wrong. This is really an exciting account of the lives of native peoples (Huron and Iroquois) during the period when E
... moreuropeans are encroaching on their territories. The depictions of violence and torture seem extreme and I am not sure if they are historically accurate, but they do make it more interesting to read, in my opinion. less
