review 1: If you think about the word 'dance' in the title, you may realize the round objects Rabbit's holding are a drum and a drum stick. I did not realize this until Rabbit went home and got out his drum. Then it made perfect sense, but in most of the illustrations it does still not look like a Native American drum to me. Another clue would have been the subtitle: 'A Traditional Iroquois Story' and the final clue would be the name of the retellers: Joseph and James Bruchac. The legend itself teaches several lessons that children will identify: "I want it now," greed, and being disrespectful of fellow animals, when Rabbit "did not notice their troubles." Younger readers will understand the story as it is told in contemporary language - important for those who retell stories for a ... morenew audience. Readers may wonder why Rabbit did not take the drum that is hanging in the tree of his home - this would be a good place to discuss different types of Iroquois drums. Children may also need guidance to identify the drum stick. Some of the different angles at which it is viewed are confusing. Three stars for the illustrations, four for the story.The repetition will engage students, and they will delight when they see their next 'foot wrappers' snow!
review 2: My son picked this book out from the library this week. I loved the retelling of this Native American folk tale (tail). The story moved at a good pace, had a fun refrain, and a good deal of humor. The moral was hard to miss, but the authors did not feel the need to clobber us with it. I adored the artwork in this book. Wonderful wit and humor there, too. My only complaint would be that it was hard to read the text on some of the pages, but that was probably because I'm over 40 and didn't bring my reading glasses upstairs to my son's room. less
