review 1: A fatter Furst-like novel set in Istanbul in the waning days of the Second World War and amid the first Cold War tensions. Leon Bauer works for an American tobacco company in Turkey, helps do odd jobs for someone in the American consulate, and has a German Jewish wife in a coma after a ship of Jewish refugees she arranged to have leave the country sank. One odd job turns hot when someone tries to kill the man his American superiors want, a Romanian war criminal. A busy mystery, love the Istanbul setting, if not always the morally conflicted choices Leon makes. He is truly an amateur playing with professionals.

... moreor me. I think the history of this region is not widely known or understood but in light of current events and Turkey's role and proximity it would have been a more palatable novel to have assumed the average reader needs to handheld through the historic significance along with the spy and romance stories. I wish I had been intrigued enough to finish it. Sorry. less

I nice re-creation of the era in Istanbul, and a complicated spy story, but not convincing to me
