review 1: I love thrillers and thought it was a great story line to have uncovered historic artefacts including Pontius Pilates diaries, proving the death and resurrection of Jesus. However, the plot of the story was weak and had far too many coincidences which made for an unrealistic read. The characters were immature and the romance between Kevin and Jill was cringeworthy at points. The idea of a cardinal and a TV evangelist (who incidentally owned a private jet) getting together to head up a group called the fellowship was not only unrealistic but was far removed from Jesus teachings and more akin to the zealots who used physical force against the corrupt authorities. There were a couple of points I did enjoy. In one of the scenes a truck driver rams into the side of the baddies... more car stopping them in their tracks. He is a christian but unaware of all the goings on and asks God somewhat despairingly why this had happened because he remembered recently praying and asking God to use him. There was also some interesting information about historic artefacts which the author had researched. Once again it was a great idea but just didn't quite pull it off for me.
review 2: I enjoyed this book. Don't overlook it for being a debut novel from a small publisher - it's a fast-paced thriller that kept me entertained start to finish. Mixing elements of archaeology with spycraft & secret societies, The Diaries of Pontius Pilate should appeal to fans of Dan Brown & Clive Cussler. I was left wanting to know a little bit more about the central characters, but the book was definitely entertaining enough that I will be purchasing the sequel, Separation of Church and State, due later this month. less
