review 1: A truck driver drives his truck into a bridge he doesn't see. A pilot crashes his multi-million dollar jet passenger liner into the ground while looking for a 12$ light bulb. We buy more than we want in buy 4 for X deals that save us no more money than buy 1 for 1/4X. We buy things we'll never use, like gym memberships, only that we think we'll use. Hallinan explores and diagrams our various sources of mistakes and recommends countermeasures to correct for judgement problems.
review 2: Joseph T. Hallinan explores human error in Why We Make Mistakes. Littered with great anecdotes, such as the story of the plane crashing with all the knowledge in the world on board to save the plane and the human penchant for early gratification instead of waiting just a little
... morebit longer.Hallinan is a journalist and that shows in the writing. While delving into the research he delivers his new found knowledge with an easy pen, making the book great fun to read. The best message I took from the book it that we make more mistakes if we are no longer challenged and aware. We pay less attention because we think we know how it should be done. In his way Hallinan makes clear that we should never be despondent and forever be challenged. The book is also insightfull discussion on the pros and cons of multitasking. It takes more energy and takes away from our focuss. Do one thing at a time. With that knowledge it's more baffling that nowadays manufacturers built cars with too much distraction on the dashboard, leading to more accidents. But we, human beings, think we can do it al. Also a distinctive human trait: we always think we know more and are better than we actually are. less
