review 1: I love when I finish a great non-fiction book that encompasses just the right amount of humor, information, accessibility and I feel like I actually learned a lot by the end of the book. Kidding Yourself sounds like its title. It's a book all about the use of self-deception and how it encompasses us in a daily basis (for better AND for worse). I loved the learning about all the psychological studies and little historical quirks that have occurred within our society, and still take place in some instances. The only fault I have with Hallinan's writing was within his use of political examples. I found it ironic in a book where he discussed people's use of unintentional biases, I could tell what his political stance was within two examples. I didn't mind, but I did found it i... moreronic that he may have unknowably placed his political bias in his own writing on a book about unintentional bias and self-deception. Irony anyone? Like I said though, that was my only major flaw with the novel and it's not that major of a flaw, just slightly ironic and humorous in the situation. I would definitely recommend that this is a GREAT book to read if your even slightly interested in psychology. *I recovered this books from Goodreads Giveaway for an honest review*
review 2: I read this book in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down. The author has an engaging and fun writing style that pulls you in while talking about all the ways that we deceive ourselves that have both positive and negative consequences. We all think we're independent, free thinkers who see things as they really are, but in reality, our beliefs are highly influenced by the world around us and our desire to maintain control of it. No matter how intelligent, rational, educated, and well-informed we are, we are all prone to lying to ourselves in one way or another. less
