review 1: One of the most powerful, thoughtful books I've read this year -- profiles of Hurricane Katrina survivors in the context of the storm and its aftermath. Deceptively-simple, haunting illustrations. The colors and style were more abstract and minimize, but it worked to the effect of focusing on the story and the personalities, on the seriousness of the storm and destruction. This book doesn't really go into politics or placing blame (then-President George W. Bush doesn't even get a mention and his administration's underfunded and understaffed FEMA is only alluded to), it doesn't sugarcoat or gloss over or romanticize or hero-worship, and it seems very comfortable with the factual, shades-of-gray approach in its journalism. Highly, highly recommended.
review 2: Th
... moreis was a short, but focused look on NOLA and the victims of Katrina. It is centered on 5 very different people with different experiences of Katrina. Neufeld cares about his real life subjects which comes through in the writing. Art style is very much like Harvey Pekar's stuff which must have been intentional. A.D. points out the difference money can make in decisions surrounding a catastrophe such as Katrina. less
